PURPOSE: There are controversies about combining distal tibia medial opening-wedge osteotomy (DTMO) with fibular valgization osteotomy (FVO) when performing supramalleolar osteotomy (SMO) for medial ankle osteoarthritis. This study aimed to assess the effect of FVO on the coronal translation of the mechanical axis by comparing the improvement of radiological indices after DTMO with and without FVO. METHODS: Forty-three ankles (mean follow-up: 42.0 months) were reviewed after SMO. Among them, 35/43 (81.4%) underwent DTMO with FVO, while 8/43 (18.6%) underwent DTMO only. To evaluate the effect of FVO radiologically, the medial gutter space (MGS) and talus centre migration (TCM) were measured. RESULTS: Post-operatively, MGS and TCM were not significantly different after DTMO only and DTMO with FVO. However, the improvement of MGS was significantly higher in the combined FVO group (0.8 mm (standard deviation [SD] 0.8 mm) vs. 1.5 mm (SD 0.8 mm); p = 0.015). More lateral translation of the talus was achieved in the FVO group (5.1 mm (SD 2.3 mm) vs. 7.5 mm (SD 3.0 mm); p = 0.033). However, the changes in the MGS and TCM were not significantly correlated with the clinical outcomes (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Our radiological evaluation confirmed a significant medial gutter space widening and lateral talar translation after the addition of FVO. The SMO with fibular osteotomy allows greater shifting of the talus and, therefore, the weight-bearing axis.

BACKGROUND: Additional research is warranted for the clinical significance of post-transplant hypertension and related antihypertensive medication use in kidney transplant (KT) recipients. METHODS: This observational study included nationwide KT recipients who maintained a functioning graft for at least 1 year after KT in South Korea, observed between 2008 and 2017. The use of antihypertensive medications lasting between 6 months and 1 year was the main exposure, and those who had inconsistent/transient use of antihypertensive drugs were excluded. The prognostic outcome included death-censored graft failure (DCGF), death-with functioning graft (DWFG), and major adverse cerebrocardiovascular events (MACCEs). RESULTS: We included 8,014 patients without post-transplant hypertension and 6,114 recipients who received treatment for hypertension in the post-transplant period. Those with post-transplant hypertension had a significantly higher risk of DCGF than those without [adjusted hazard ratio (HR) 1.27 (1.09-1.48)]. Post-transplant hypertension patients who required multiple drugs showed a significantly higher risk of DWFG [HR 1.57 (1.17-2.10)] and MACCE [HR 1.35 (1.01-1.81)] than the controls. Among the single-agent users, those who received beta-blockers showed a significantly higher risk of DCGF, although the risks of DWFG or MACCE were similar between the types of antihypertensive agents. Among the multiple agent users, the prognosis was similar, regardless of the prescribed types of antihypertensive agents. CONCLUSION: Post-transplant hypertension was associated with poor post-transplant prognosis, particularly when multiple types of medications were required for treatment. During initial prescription of antihypertensive medication, clinicians may consider that beta-blockers were associated with a higher risk of DCGF in the single-agent users.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Cardiovascular disease is the main cause of death in end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) patients. We aimed to explore the association between statin initiation after starting dialysis and all-cause mortality in statin-naïve ESKD patients. METHODS: We analyzed nationwide claims data of incident dialysis patients from 2010 to 2017 in South Korea. Patients who had previous cardiovascular events or were administered statins before dialysis were excluded. The study group included dialysis patients receiving statins within 1 year after dialysis initiation. The control group was organized after propensity-score matching with age, sex, time of dialysis initiation, and underlying diabetes mellitus and hypertension. The main outcomes were all-cause mortality and major cardiovascular events. RESULTS: We included 1596 patients who started statin treatment and 1:1 matched statin-nonusers. During the 9438 person-year follow-up, 468 deaths and 264 major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) occurred. Statin initiation was associated with a reduced risk of all-cause mortality (adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) 0.72, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.60-0.87, p = 0.001), but not with MACE incidence (aHR 1.06, 95% CI 0.83-1.36, p = 0.62). In particular, patients prescribed the recommended dosage of statins according to the Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes guidelines showed the lowest mortality risk (aHR 0.55, 95% CI 0.40-0.75, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Statin initiation was associated with lower risk of all-cause mortality in statin-naïve ESKD patients. As indication bias may be present in observational study setting, further prospective studies are warranted to validate the association of statin initiation with mortality in incident dialysis cases.

BACKGROUND: The effect of supramalleolar osteotomy without a bone marrow-stimulating procedure for articular cartilage regeneration in the ankle joint remains unknown. We investigated whether supramalleolar osteotomy yielded favorable clinical and radiographic outcomes. We also evaluated the joint tissue appearance after supramalleolar osteotomy without a bone marrow-stimulating procedure with use of second-look arthroscopy and its correlation with the outcome. METHODS: Twenty-nine ankles were retrospectively reviewed at a mean of 2.9 years after supramalleolar osteotomy without a bone marrow-stimulating procedure. All 29 ankles had had second-look arthroscopy to evaluate tibiotalar joint tissue regeneration at a minimum of 1 year postoperatively. A visual analog scale (VAS) pain score, the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS) ankle-hindfoot score, and patient satisfaction were used for functional evaluations. Ankle osteoarthritis was classified with the Takakura staging system, and the tibial anterior surface (TAS) angle and tibial lateral surface (TLS) angle were measured on radiographs. RESULTS: The mean VAS and AOFAS scores improved from 6.2 (95% confidence interval [CI], 5.7 to 6.8) preoperatively to 1.5 (95% CI, 0.9 to 2.1) postoperatively and from 60.5 (95% CI, 54.9 to 66.1) preoperatively to 88.3 (95% CI, 84.3 to 92.3) postoperatively, respectively. Patient satisfaction with the outcome of the procedure was classified as very satisfied or satisfied for 27 ankles (93.1%). Sixteen of 21 ankles that were classified as Takakura stage-IIIa and 2 of 3 ankles that were classified as stage-IIIb preoperatively improved to stage II postoperatively. The mean TAS and TLS angles significantly improved from 83.5° (95% CI, 82.2° to 84.7°) and 77.0° (95% CI, 75.4° to 78.7°) preoperatively to 94.2° (95% CI, 92.7° to 95.7°) and 80.4° (95% CI, 78.3° to 82.5°) postoperatively, respectively. On second-look arthroscopy, 26 ankles (89.7%) showed tissue regeneration of the medial compartment of the ankle joint and no patient showed cartilage deterioration. CONCLUSIONS: Medial tibiotalar tissue regeneration was identified in most patients with medial compartment ankle osteoarthritis following supramalleolar osteotomy without a bone marrow-stimulating procedure. The procedure results in satisfactory clinical and radiographic outcomes with high patient satisfaction. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Therapeutic Level IV. BACKGROUND: Triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) injury is common in distal radius fractures. The purpose of this study was to compare the conservative and surgical treatments of TFCC injury of the wrist associated with distal radius fractures. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on 39 patients who received treatment for TFCC injury with distal radius fractures. All patients were treated using a volar locking plate for distal radius fractures. Twenty-six patients who received conservative treatment for TFCC through long arm splinting were classified into group 1, and 13 patients who received surgical treatment for TFCC were classified into group 2. The splint was maintained for 6 weeks in both groups. For clinical evaluation, the range of motion (ROM) of the wrist joint, patient-rated wrist evaluation (PRWE) score, Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) score, and grip strength were measured. Distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) stability was evaluated through a stress load test and graded between grade 0 and 3 intraoperatively after fixation and at the final follow-up. RESULTS: In group 1, the average DASH score was 11.1 ± 4.4, the average PRWE score was 10.2 ± 4.6, the grip strength was 89.4% relative to the unaffected side, the average ROM of the wrist joint was 65° ± 7.0° for extension, 51.5° ± 8.1° for flexion, 86° ± 5.1° for supination, and 85° ± 5.2° for pronation, and DRUJ stability at the final follow-up was grade 0 in 58.62%, grade 1 in 31.03%, grade 2 in 10.34%, and grade 3 in 0%. In group 2, the average DASH score was 13 ± 5.0, the average PRWE score was 12.4 ± 3.7, the grip strength was 87.3% relative to the unaffected side, and the average ROM of the wrist joint was 60° ± 9.8° for extension, 53.1° ± 7.0° for flexion, 85° ± 5.3° for supination, and 86.8° ± 4.5° for pronation. At the final follow-up, DRUJ stability was grade 0 in 66.67%, grade 1 in 25%, grade 2 in 8.3%, and grade 3 in 0%. The 2 groups showed no statistically significant differences in DASH score, PREW score, grip strength, ROM, and final follow-up DRUJ stability. CONCLUSIONS: There were no statistically significant differences in the clinical outcomes between the surgical and conservative treatment groups. Therefore, when normal radiological indices are achieved after treatment of distal radius fractures, DRUJ stability can be obtained by conservative treatment.

Three central themes in the study of the phenomenon of resistive switching are the nature of the conducting phase, why it forms, and how it forms. In this study, the answers to all three questions are provided by performing switching experiments in situ in a transmission electron microscope on thin films of the model system polycrystalline SrTiO3 . On the basis of high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, electron-energy-loss spectroscopy and in situ current-voltage measurements, the conducting phase is identified to be SrTi11 O20 . This phase is only observed at specific grain boundaries, and a Ruddlesden-Popper phase, Sr3 Ti2 O7 , is typically observed adjacent to the conducting phase. These results allow not only the proposal that filament formation in this system has a thermodynamic origin-it is driven by electrochemical polarization and the local oxygen activity in the film decreasing below a critical value-but also the deduction of a phase diagram for strongly reduced SrTiO3 . Furthermore, why many conducting filaments are nucleated at one electrode but only one filament wins the race to the opposite electrode is also explained. The work thus provides detailed insights into the origin and mechanisms of filament generation and rupture.

INTRODUCTION: Although clinical results of anatomic reconstruction using allograft are reportedly good, studies on how accurately the tunnel has been made after surgery are very rare. The purpose of this study was to analyze the postoperative locations of the tunnels through 3-dimensional computed tomography (3D-CT) after anatomic ligament reconstruction and to evaluate its clinical results. HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesized that anatomic lateral ligament reconstruction could lead to excellent results in clinical outcomes by repositioning anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) and calcaneofibular ligament (CFL) accurately. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-three special forces of soldiers who were diagnosed as chronic ankle instability (CAI) were included. Visual analogue scale (VAS), American orthopaedic foot and ankle society (AOFAS) ankle-hind foot functional scores, and Tegner activity scale were comparatively analyzed before the surgery and at final follow-up. The locations of the talar, fibular and calcaneal tunnels were evaluated with 3D-CT taken after the surgery. Talar tilt and anterior drawer displacement were measured on stress radiographs. RESULTS: The mean follow-up period was 26.8±3.6 months. The VAS decreased from 6.9±1.6 to 1.7±1.3, AOFAS ankle-hindfoot functional score increased from 61.3±14.8 to 88.7±9.2, and Tegner activity scale improved from 5.3±1.2 to 6.4±1.3 (p<0.001). Talar tunnel for ATFL was located about68% of the way from the lateral talar process, and fibular tunnels for ATFL and CFL were approximately 52% and 20% of the way from the fibular tip. The calcaneus tunnel was approximately 17mm posterosuperior from the peroneal tubercle on 3D-CT. Talar tilt decreased from 15.8±4.8 to 3.9±2.1 degrees (p<0.001). There were excellent inter-observer agreements for CT evaluation (Kappa values were from 0.83 to 0.92). There was no relapse of lateral instability. DISCUSSION: Anatomic reconstruction of the lateral ligaments using allograft and the interference screw for CAI showed good results in postoperative stability and subjective clinical evaluation by repositioning the location of ATFL and CFL accurately on radiological determination. Most electrolytes for rechargeable Mg batteries require time-consuming conditioning or precycling process to achieve a fully reversible Mg deposition/dissolution, which hinders the normal operation of Mg batteries. This study details a simple and effective method for eliminating this conditioning behavior using heptamethyldisilazane (HpMS) as an electrolyte additive. It was found that the HpMS additive greatly increases the current density and Coulombic efficiency of Mg deposition/dissolution from the initial cycles in various sulfone and glyme solutions containing MgCl2 or Mg(TFSI)2. The beneficial effect of HpMS was ascribed to its ability to scavenge trace water in the electrolytes and remove Mg(OH)2 and Mg(TFSI)2-decomposition products from the Mg surface. Considering its applicability for a wide range of Mg electrolytes, the use of HpMS is expected to accelerate the development of practical Mg batteries.

Thirty patients with displaced midshaft clavicle fractures were prospectively enrolled in this study. Fifteen were randomly assigned to the minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis group and 15 to the conventional plate osteosynthesis group. Constant score, visual analog scale satisfaction score, operative time, scar length, and complications, including hypoesthesia, were evaluated at least 1 year postoperatively to determine functional outcomes and time to bone union as a radiological outcome. Factors related to bone union, including the gap interval between fracture fragments and the number of fracture fragments, were also evaluated. The Constant score and the visual analog scale satisfaction score were higher in the minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis group than in the conventional plate osteosynthesis group; however, there was no significant difference between the groups in these scores or in the time to bone union (all P>.05). Hypoesthesia was the only complication, and its incidence was not different between the groups (P=.249). However, operative time (52.33±13.87 vs 110.33±25.39 minutes, P<.001) and scar length (64.95±3.19 vs 99.39±15.98 mm, P<.001) were significantly shorter in the minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis group than in the conventional plate osteosynthesis group, respectively. In the minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis group, time to bone union was significantly correlated with the gap interval (P=.004) and the number of fracture fragments (P=.002). Minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis showed some superiority over conventional plate fixation for midshaft clavicle fractures, having a shorter operative time and scar length. The time to bone union was influenced by the reduction status and the number of fracture fragments in the minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis group. [Orthopedics. 2018; 41(5):e649-e654.].

BACKGROUND: This study is performed to evaluate anchor-related outcomes and complications after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair using 30% ß-tricalcium phosphate (ß-TCP) with 70% poly lactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA) biocomposite suture anchors. METHODS: A total of 78 patients (mean age, 61.3 ± 6.9 years) who underwent arthroscopic medium-to-large full-thickness rotator cuff tear repair were enrolled. The technique employed 30% ß-TCP with 70% PLGA biocomposite suture anchors at the medial row (38 patients, Healix BRTM anchor [Healix group]; 40 patients, Fixone anchor B [Fixone group]). The radiologic outcomes (including perianchor cyst formation or bone substitution) and anatomical outcomes of the healing failure rate were evaluated using magnetic resonance imaging at least 6 months after surgery, the pain visual analogue scale at 3, 6 months, and final follow-up visit, and American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons scores at least 1 year postoperatively. Anchor-related complications were also evaluated. RESULTS: The perianchor cyst formation incidence was similar for both groups (60.5%, Healix group; 60.0%, Fixone group; p=0.967), although severe perianchor cyst incidence was slightly lower in the Fixone group (15.0%) than in the Healix group (21.1%). There was no occurrence of anchor absorption and bone substitution. No differences were observed in the healing failure rate (13.2%, Healix group; 15.0%, Fixone group; p=0.815) and functional outcome between groups (all p>0.05). Anchor breakage occurred in 5 patients (2 Healix anchors and 3 Fixone anchors); however, there were no major anchor-related complications in either group. CONCLUSIONS: No differences were observed in the clinical outcomes of the Healix and Fixone groups, neither were there any accompanying major anchor-related complications.

The atomic-scale synthesis of artificial oxide heterostructures offers new opportunities to create novel states that do not occur in nature. The main challenge related to synthesizing these structures is obtaining atomically sharp interfaces with designed termination sequences. In this study, it is demonstrated that the oxygen pressure (PO2) during growth plays an important role in controlling the interfacial terminations of SrRuO3 /BaTiO3 /SrRuO3 (SRO/BTO/SRO) ferroelectric (FE) capacitors. The SRO/BTO/SRO heterostructures are grown by a pulsed laser deposition method. The top SRO/BTO interface, grown at high PO2 (around 150 mTorr), usually exhibits a mixture of RuO2 -BaO and SrO-TiO2 terminations. By reducing PO2, the authors obtain atomically sharp SRO/BTO top interfaces with uniform SrO-TiO2 termination. Using capacitor devices with symmetric and uniform interfacial termination, it is demonstrated for the first time that the FE critical thickness can reach the theoretical limit of 3.5 unit cells.

BACKGROUND: Subway suicide can significantly impact the general public. Platform Screen Doors (PSDs) are considered to be an effective strategy to prevent suicides at subway stations, but the evidence on their effectiveness is limited. METHODS: We assessed the effectiveness of installing half- and full-height platform screen doors in reducing subway suicides using Poisson regression analysis. Ten-year monthly panel data for 121 subway stations between 2003 and 2012 in the Seoul metropolitan area were used for the analysis. RESULTS: We found that installing PSDs decreases fatal suicide cases by 89% (95% CI: 57-97%). We also found that the installation of full-height PSDs resulted in the elimination of subway suicides by completely blocking access to the track area; however, half-height PSDs, which do not extend to the ceiling of the platform, were not as effective as full-height ones. LIMITATION: Our findings were based on the data from a single subway operator for a limited period of time. Accordingly, we did not consider the possibility that some passengers choose to die at a station run by other operators. Our study did not examine the potential substitution effects of other suicide methods. CONCLUSION: Installing physical barriers at subway stations can be an effective strategy to reduce the number of subway suicides; however, half-height PSDs are not as effective as full-height ones, even when they are as high as the height of an adult. Thus, these barriers should be made high enough so that nobody can climb over them.

PURPOSE: To prospectively evaluate topographical and sex variations in the T2 relaxation values of tibiotalar cartilage (TTC) of healthy young adults. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sagittal 8-echo multiecho spin-echo T2 maps of TTC were acquired using a 3.0T MR in 25 male and 25 female healthy young adult participants. Quantitative measurements of T2 values in tibial cartilage (TBC) and talar cartilage (TLC) were obtained from three zones (anterior zone, AZ; middle zone, MZ; and posterior zone, PZ) and from four compartments (medial compartment, MC; midmedial compartment, MMC; midlateral compartment, MLC; and lateral compartment, LC) of TBC and TLC in the sagittal plane. RESULTS: The T2 values of AZ (for TBC, 29.31 msec; for TLC, 35.81 msec) and MZ (for TBC, 28.56 msec; for TLC, 36.12 msec) in males were significantly higher than those in females (for AZ of TBC, 26.99 msec; for AZ of TLC, 33.56 msec; for MZ of TBC, 25.88 msec; for MZ of TLC, 31.85 msec) (for TBC, AZ, P = 0.009, MZ, P = 0.002; for TLC, AZ, P = 0.047, MZ, P = 0.001). Except for MMC and MLC of TBC (MMC, P = 0.02, MLC, P = 0.03), TTC T2 values did not differ significantly between these compartment in either group (for TBC, MC, P = 0.27, LC, P = 0.37; for TLC, MC, P = 0.26, MMC, P = 0.08, MLC, P = 0.30, LC, P = 0.10). CONCLUSION: We found significant sex and topographic variations among TTC T2 values of healthy young adults. Acknowledgment of the significant topographical and sex variations in cartilage T2 values may minimize misinterpretation of ankle joint TTC T2 mapping data.

RESUMO

The growth of leakage current paths in Al-doped TiO2 (ATO) films is observed by in situ TEM under negative bias stress. Through systematic HAADF-STEM, STEM-EDS, and STEM-EELS studies, it is confirmed that the electric field-induced growth of the Ru-doped TiO2 phase is the main reason for the ATO film's negative leakage.

PURPOSE: To perform a prospective quantitative analysis of median nerve T2 values and cross-sectional area (CSA) in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) as compared to asymptomatic volunteers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twelve CTS patients with positive nerve conduction results and 12 healthy volunteers (controls) were enrolled and underwent axial T2 mapping of the wrist joints. Median nerve T2 values and CSAs at the distal radioulnar joint, pisiform, and hook of hamate levels were compared between the groups. RESULTS: The T2 values at the proximal and distal carpal tunnel were higher in the CTS patients than in the controls (P < 0.05). The T2 values at the distal radioulnar joint did not differ between the groups (P = 0.99). The CSAs of the median nerve at all levels of the carpal tunnel were significantly larger in the CTS patients than in the controls (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: In conclusion, our study demonstrated that median nerve T2 assessment is feasible and that T2 assessment may offer functional information about the median nerve in the carpal tunnel and has the potential to be a promising complementary method for evaluation of CTS patients. A future study with larger sample sizes is necessary to investigate the potential effect of median nerve T2 assessment to a reliable tool in the diagnosis of CTS.

BACKGROUND: Abalone has long been used as a valuable food source in East Asian countries. Although the nutritional importance of abalone has been reported through in vitro and in vivo studies, there is little evidence about the potential anti-tumor effects of abalone visceral extract. The aim of the present study is to examine anti-tumor efficacy of abalone visceral extract and to elucidate its working mechanism. METHODS: In the present study, we used breast cancer model using BALB/c mouse-derived 4T1 mammary carcinoma and investigated the effect of abalone visceral extract on tumor development. Inhibitory effect against tumor metastasis was assessed by histopathology of lungs. Cox-2 productions by primary and secondary tumor were measured by real-time RT-PCR and immunoblotting (IB). Proliferation assay based on [3H]-thymidine incorporation and measurement of cytokines and effector molecules by RT-PCR were used to confirm tumor suppression efficacy of abalone visceral extract by modulating cytolytic CD8+ T cells. The cytotoxicity of CD8+ T cell was compared by JAM test. RESULTS: Oral administration of abalone visceral extract reduced tumor growth (tumor volume and weight) and showed reduced metastasis as confirmed by decreased level of splenomegaly (spleen size and weight) and histological analysis of the lung metastasis (gross analysis and histological staining). Reduced expression of Cox-2 (mRNA and protein) from primary tumor and metastasized lung was also detected. In addition, treatment of abalone visceral extract increased anti-tumor activities of CD8+ T cells by increasing the proliferation capacity and their cytolytic activity. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that abalone visceral extract has anti-tumor effects by suppressing tumor growth and lung metastasis through decreasing Cox-2 expression level as well as promoting proliferation and cytolytic function of CD8+ T cells.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Multifocal seeding of the leptomeninges by malignant cells, which is usually referred to as leptomeningeal carcinomatous metastasis, produces substantial morbidity and mortality. The diagnosis of leptomeningeal metastasis is usually established by cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) investigation, including cytology, cell counts, protein, glucose, and a tumor marker such as carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA). This study examined the diagnostic value of CEA in the CSF. METHODS: We measured the CSF CEA level in 32 patients with leptomeningeal metastasis. The control group consisted of 19 cancer patients without leptomeningeal metastasis. CEA was measured by the chemiluminescent emission method. RESULTS: The CEA level was significantly higher in patients with leptomeningeal metastasis than in the control group (p<0.005). The level of CSF protein was higher and that of CSF glucose was lower in patients with leptomeningeal metastasis than in the control group (p<0.005). CONCLUSIONS: The CSF CEA level is useful for diagnosing leptomeningeal carcinomatous metastasis. The CSF levels of protein and glucose are also useful in the diagnosis.

To investigate the antibiotic activity and synergistic effect, analogues were designed to increase not only net positive charge by Lys-substitution but also hydrophobic helix region by Leu-substitution from CA (1-8)-MA (1-12) hybrid peptide (CA-MA). In particular, CA-MA analogue P5 (P5), designed by flexible region (GIG-->P)-substitution, Lys- (positions 4, 8, 14, 15) and Leu- (positions 5, 6, 12, 13, 16, 17, 20) substitutions, showed potent antibacterial activity in minimal inhibition concentration (MIC) and minimal bactericidal concentration (MBC) without having hemolytic activity. In addition, P5 and chloramphenicol has potent synergistic effect against tested cell lines. As determined by propidium iodide (PI) staining, flow cytometry showed that P5 plus chloramphenicol-treated cells had higher fluorescence intensity than untreated, P5- and chloramphenicol-treated cells. The effect on plasma membrane was examined by investigating the transmembrane potential depolarizing experiments of S. aureus with P5 and chloramphenicol. The result showed that the peptide exerts its antibacterial activity by acting on the plasma membrane. Furthermore, P5 caused significant morphological alterations of S. aureus, as shown by scanning electron microscopy. Our results suggest that peptide P5 is an excellent candidate as a lead compound for the development of novel anti-infective agents and synergistic effects with conventional antibiotic agents but lack hemolytic activity.
